Friday Night

It turned out to be a really nice day yesterday. I met some friends for some sewing in the morning. I made it through the first week of school and it went well overall. After school, I went out with a few friends from work, came home to some homemade fettuccine alfredo that DH had ready for me, and we headed off to the football game. We always sit with a large group of friends from church, share some candy, and cheer on the band and the football team. All of us have kids in the marching band. I mentioned the budget cuts another time and the fact that the band wouldn't be marching on the field this year. It was part of the reason TB decided to give football a try for the first time. At 6'6'' and 165, he's not exactly built like a football player, but he has grown some muscles and probably improved his speed some. His real goal is to make the varsity baseball team in the spring, so he'll have to keep in shapefor that. I went to a tiny school in Iowa, so the city atmosphere of a cross-town rivalry, fancy band, and danceline are all new to me. It's a lot of fun to watch though and we won the game 32-6. TB watched the action from the sidelines; he would have played in the JV game this morning, but it was canceled, so we'll have to wait to see him play. After the game, we went to one of the friends home for munchies and drinks and ended up visiting until 12:15.

Peter Mayer

I went to the most awesome concert last night. It was my first experience with a house concert and I loved it. DH and I and four other couples went to this concert in a neighboring town. A couple we didn't know hosted it in their home for about 50 people. Everyone brought some hors d'ouerves to share and some brought wine. Peter Callahan, a local musician opened for him with three songs. Following that, Peter Mayer played a long set, we had an intermission time where we could munch on food, mingle, have a glass of wine, purchase CDs, etc. and then he played another set. If you are not familiar with Peter Mayer, he is a folk singer based out of the Twin Cities who writes his own songs. Seeing him live is wonderful as he intersperses his playing with stories that are wonderful, spiritual, funny, and thought provoking. He will be performing at the Fitzgerald Theatre in St. Paul on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, it would be fun to go then too. After the concert, we invited all of our friends back to our house for dessert. It was the kind of night that was good for the soul; beautiful weather, laughing and visiting with friends, trying something new that turned out so well, and of course the music.

Friday Night Football or It's All About the Band

We had our first real home football game this Friday night. What made it real was the band performing in uniform. I did watch the game from time to time so I know that we won 8-6. The score should tell you that it wasn't the most exciting of games, but it was the first win of the season, so I am happy for the football team. As a sophomore, it is TB's first year in marching band and this was their first half-time show, so I was there to cheer for the band. There is quite a group of friends that we sit at the game with to watch our kids in the band. We visit and pass candy we've brought from home and stand and cheer at the appropriate times. We had pretty decent weather on Friday, it got a little chilly, but there was no wind so that helped a lot. The band has a tradition of making the big "C", upper left during each game. This year the music theme is ABBA, so songs from the Mamma Mia movie...Mamma Mia, of course, as well as Dancing Queen, and The Winner Takes It All. I managed to refrain from singing along, I was too busy taking pictures. The kids wear their hats backwards after a win. Next time TB will have to wear a t-shirt that matches his uniform a little better.
